Children attending a high
quality preschool program are more likely to achieve long term academic success.
Well-designed preschool education programs produce long-term
improvements in school success, including higher achievement test
scores, lower rates of grade repetition and special education, and higher
educational attainment. Some preschool programs are also associated
with reduced delinquency and crime in childhood and adulthood.

Additional studies have shown that cognitive gains from preschool programs are larger when programs are focused on intentional and
individualized teaching and small group learning. Programs with these features produced long-term
cognitive effects equivalent to one half or more of the achievement gap through the end of high school.
The bottom line: preschool does produce substantial long-term gains,
particularly when programs are properly designed. |
